Tania Navarro was born on January 6, 1956, in Barcelona during Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, and grew up in a society where her identity remained invisible, even in language itself. From a very young age, she knew she was different—a girl in a body that society refused to recognize—and this early certainty led her to challenge the boundaries between the intimate and the public, the private and the collective. Her childhood, as she describes it, was “a childhood I never had”: at just eight years old, she would secretly wear her sister’s clothes to dance at local fairs, and at nine she was sent to a religious reformatory, where she was called “the devil’s child,” had her head shaved, and endured punishments that reflected a society that criminalized difference.

As a teenager, she was imprisoned in Barcelona’s Model Prison at just sixteen under laws that persecuted homosexual and transgender people as if their identities were crimes. She was also confined to the Sant Boi psychiatric hospital, where she reports being subjected to electroshock treatments intended to “cure” what was never an illness, but rather the affirmation of her own existence. Yet Tania refused to remain silent. During the 1970s, she emerged as a cabaret performer and vedette in venues across Barcelona, Madrid, and beyond, using the stage to challenge the limits imposed by dominant social norms. In 1977, during Spain’s democratic transition, she became one of the first transgender women to participate in Barcelona’s LGTBI Pride demonstration, at a time when taking to the streets still meant risking one’s life.
