LGBT RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Once again, the Catalan LGBT community takes to the streets to demand that LGBT rights be respected as <\/span>human rights<\/b>, both in our own country \u2014a pioneer in liberties and open to the world\u2014 and beyond our borders.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year is dedicated to <\/span>LGBT refugees<\/b>, which is a sign that Pride is always open to dialogue with other countries, receptive to their populations, and <\/span>in solidarity with LGBT refugees<\/b> who fight for the defense of their rights and the recognition of their identities \u2014all within a context of ongoing homophobic persecution, violations of freedoms, and cases of physical and psychological violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>December 10, 1948<\/b>, the United Nations General Assembly approved the <\/span>Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/b>, affirming that \u201call human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, in <\/span>76 countries<\/b>, same-sex relationships are still criminalized, and in <\/span>seven<\/b> they are punishable by death. Since 1990, nearly <\/span>40 countries<\/b> have legalized or decriminalized relationships between gays, lesbians, trans, and bisexual people, and have banned discrimination against LGBT individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n

We watch with <\/span>indignation<\/b> as <\/span>LGBTphobia<\/b> grows across all continents, including Europe. Gays, lesbians, trans, and bisexual people are being persecuted and criminalized while most countries remain <\/span>silent and indifferent<\/b>. We see extreme situations in <\/span>Russia<\/b>, <\/span>Uganda<\/b>, <\/span>Nigeria<\/b>, and <\/span>Latin America<\/b>, where <\/span>extrajudicial executions, homophobic laws, and horrifying hate crimes<\/b> still exist. <\/span>We cannot remain silent.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The recent <\/span>anti-discrimination law for LGBT people in Galicia<\/b>, as well as the <\/span>Anti-Homophobia Bill<\/b> currently under debate in the <\/span>Catalan Parliament<\/b> \u2014a pioneering bill in the Spanish state, whose swift approval we expect\u2014 are signs that our struggles are <\/span>not in vain<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, <\/span>homophobic and transphobic crimes and assaults<\/b> continue to rise. LGBTphobic <\/span>bullying in schools<\/b>, <\/span>grassroots sports<\/b>, and <\/span>leisure activities<\/b> targeting children and teenagers is still a sad and pressing reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are here today fighting for <\/span>new and essential demands<\/b> in defense of democracy and equal rights. We <\/span>will not be silenced<\/b> by those who wish to erase our voice or ignore the many injustices still present in our society. We will continue to fight \u2014and with <\/span>greater strength than ever<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We also regret that due to harsh <\/span>budget cuts<\/b>, important services for the LGBT community have been shut down, such as the <\/span>900 Rosa helpline<\/b> or the <\/span>Federation of LGBT Associations of Catalonia (the \u2018Coordi\u2019)<\/b> \u2014a historic federation, pioneer in the fight for LGBT freedoms and against <\/span>HIV\/AIDS<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We know that <\/span>we must protect the basic human rights<\/b> of LGBT people worldwide. And to achieve this, it’s not enough to simply change laws in many countries \u2014we must also change <\/span>people\u2019s mentalities<\/b>. In this regard, <\/span>education<\/b> and <\/span>social mobilization<\/b> are essential tools.<\/span><\/p>\n

Together, we can build a <\/span>fairer world<\/b>, free of homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, racism, and sexism \u2014a world in which all social groups can truly be free and equal in terms of citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n
